Affordable Care Act

What is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

Itโ€™s a federal law that was passed in 2010 to make health insurance more accessible and affordable for Americans.

Who itโ€™s for:

Primarily people under age 65 who donโ€™t have insurance through work or other programs.

Includes individuals, families, and some self-employed or early retirees.

How it works:

Plans are divided into metal tiers โ€” Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum โ€” that reflect cost-sharing, not quality.

You may qualify for subsidies (premium tax credits) or cost-sharing reductions based on income.

Coverage renews annually, and open enrollment usually runs Nov 1 โ€“ Dec 15.

Here's a quick breakdown of what it does:

  • ๐Ÿฉบ Expands access to health insurance โ€” through the Health Insurance Marketplace (Healthcare.gov) and expanded Medicaid in many states.

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Provides subsidies (tax credits) โ€” to help lower- and middle-income individuals and families afford coverage.

  • ๐Ÿšซ Protects people with pre-existing conditions โ€” insurance companies canโ€™t deny coverage or charge more because of health history.

  • ๐Ÿ“‹ Sets minimum coverage standards โ€” all ACA-compliant plans must include โ€œessential health benefitsโ€ like preventive care, prescriptions, maternity, and mental health services.

  • ๐Ÿ‘ถ Allows young adults to stay on their parentsโ€™ plan until age 26.

Special enrollment periods:

Life changes happen โ€” and when they do, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to get or change health coverage outside of Open Enrollment. You may qualify if you:

  • Lose other qualifying coverage

  • Get married or divorced

  • Have or adopt a child

  • Move to a new area

  • Lose Medicaid eligibility
